The Semper opera house is one of the important historic buildings in Dresden.

It was built from1838 till 1841 by Gottfried Semper, destroyed by fire in 1869 and rebuilt from 1871 till 1878 in High Renaissance style according to Semper’s plans by his son Manfred.

The house was completely destroyed in 1945 and reopened in 1985 after extensive reconstruction. It is the only theatre in Germany that bears the name of its architect.
